What is FemmeBMX
FemmeBMX is a a non-profit organization whose goal is simply to make the sport of BMX Racing and Freestyle more accessible to girls. We provide knowledge, host various learning opportunities, provide loaner bikes and safety equipment and support a freestyle team.
What got you started with FemmeBMX
I personally was introduced to BMX while living in Guatemala City in Central America. I worked for a small guerilla record label and recording studio, MIR Records. The owner, Mako, had a Haro (4 pegs, front and rear brakes) that he let me borrow. Anytime I had some downtime between recording or events, I would go out and ride street with some of the local kids. When I returned to the states, first thing I did was buy a bike. For the following 9 years, I lived all over the US, but rarely came across another female rider who rode street or park regularly. I saw many girls come and give BMX a try with a friend or a boyfriend, but many ended up shying away from fear, pressured to try things above their level of skill or mental preparedness. Upon jumping over to the racing side, I discovered far more girls racing than riding freestyle on the National level. But on the local level, the environment typically isn’t ideal for just any girl to pick up a bike and join in. At any given local track, girls’ numbers are generally low, forcing many girls to race boys as Rookies or Novices. Inevitably, the girls who do stick around racing want more competition; so they turn “Girl”, the equivalent to men’s “Expert” to find competition at the National Level. To stay Novice or Intermediate would force the girls to race boys Nationally as well. However, once a rider turns “Girl” and goes back to their local track, they suddenly find themselves racing expert boys at the Local level. As you can imagine this can cause a female racer to get frustrated, eventually lose interest, and finally quit.
FemmeBMX started when I recognized a need to get more girls involved in the sport of BMX. An increase in girls participation will accelerate the growth of the sport on the female side in both racing and freestyle, eventually providing more opportunity for Elite racers and Pro Freestylers. In order to get those numbers, however, the sport needed to be more accessible to females at the grassroots level. FemmeBMX seeks to do just that by providing a learning environment that is low or free of cost, comfortable and progressive. FemmeBMX helps to provide the extra support needed to help ensure longevity in a female BMXer’s careers.

What do you hope to teach girls at gro Experience
It is my goal to help instill a notion that BMX isn’t “just for boys.” I want to show girls how they can excel (and stay injury-free) with a progressive learning approach. No feeling is better than when a young athlete does something in a day, that she never dreamed she’d do in a million years!
